Into the Storm. King penguins (Aptenodytes patagonicus) entering the sea. Falkland Islands
It was my last day after two weeks in the Falkland Islands. I was tired, the weather was deteriorating, and I was about to leave on a 2.5 hour, bumpy four-wheel drive journey. I thought about sitting this last shoot out but, as tired as I was, my desire to chase after dramatic lighting won out. As I approached, the rain began to fall and I second-guessed my decision. Fortunately, the rain stopped shortly thereafter, the storm clouds moved out to sea, and the sun emerged. The interplay of the light on the beach and the aqua-blue water, with the dark storm clouds on the horizon, created the drama and mood I was after. For me, this image captures the essence of Volunteer Point: the king penguins, the beach, the sea, and, of course, dramatic and changeable weather. Volunteer Point, Falkland Islands
